iTunes Review
By the end of the '80s, U2 already ranked among the planet's rock titans. Rather than rest on their laurels, the quartet tapped into throbbing club beats and ambient electronic sounds to create 1991's Achtung Baby. The band's spiritually inspired idealism and bracing guitar textures remain. What's strikingly new here is a groove-driven approach that puts fresh meat on U2's previously lean sonic bones. Bono is equally adventurous as a lyricist, adding a potent erotic charge to his themes of redemption and unity. "Even Better Than the Real Thing" and "Mysterious Ways" pulse with transcendent passion, while "Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World" marries salvation with sensuality. From the metal-tinged fire of "Zoo Station" to the smoldering grandeur of "One," the band creates music both timeless and boldly contemporary. From its first track to the last, Achtung Baby is a risk-taking work that re-defined U2 for the rest of the '90s.
Customer Reviews
Hamazing.
What can I say? In all my life I've never "bonded" with an album anywhere close to the way I did with Achtung Baby. I've listened to it well over a hundred times. I grew up on it...I've gone from loving it to hating it. It's practically a member of my family. The point is, this is *my* album. Never before and never again will I have this kind of relationship with an album. Sometimes I think the album was conceived as an elaborate, drug-infused dream. Other times I think it's an entirely personal and emotional album. Even other times, it's just a cool rock album. While this may tell you more about me and the album than the album itself, that's precisely the point. This is an album that's meant to creep its way into your life, and stay there.
Zoo Station, One, So Cruel, Ultraviolet, and most of all, Acrobat are among U2's best. Or any band's best, for that matter. It's unfortunate to see such an incredible band getting such a big recent backlash in the media. The average 19-year-old indie hipster doesn't know U2 existed before "Beautiful Day." Or, more accurately, doesn't care. After all, Achtung Baby didn't make Pitchfork's Top 100, so how great can it really be?
Heart-wrenching, dark, and superb.
At the end of the 1980s, U2 had cemented their place as rock music's most intrepid and successful outfit. Following an ambitious and overbearing outing on the ill-received "Rattle and Hum", as well as intense interpersonal conflict within the group over their direction and future, U2 entered the 1990s as a band divided, desperately seeking to discover a new vein of creativity. The result is U2's second masterpiece, and one of the greatest albums of the decade. The band's relocation to Berlin, Germany following the end of the Cold War led the band to tap into the raw energy and possibility of a revolutionized landscape that Bowie had utilized some years earlier, and U2 emerge on "Achtung Baby" as a band reborn. From the ultra-produced, valiant opener "Zoo Station" to the anthemic, heartbreaking conclusion ensemble of "Acrobat" and "Love is Blindness", the band combine industrial Euro-dance beats with skeletal rock hooks and dark imagery for an original sound that is both a breakthrough and departure for U2. The lyrics of each song operate as a running dialog between two lovers; a more personal take for a band known primarily for their political musings and message. The content is a critical, often ominous take on love and sexual desire, sometimes bordering on the perverse. What makes the fusion work is the superior performance of every member of the group and a series of songs that form some of the best works in the band's catalog. "One", a naked look at the damage and promise of relationships, dominated worldwide charts and paced the album's rise in sales. "Mysterious Ways" continued the tempo on what remains the group's best collection of released singles on any given album, teamed with the pop-darling "Even Better Than the Real Thing" and the ironic, egomaniacal "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses". "Achtung Baby" was a daring act for a band at the crossroads. Its continued success and relevance stands as a testament to the talent and vision of the group, and arguably remains U2's finest work.
My #1 desert island album
Wow, hard to believe it's been almost 14 years since Bono and company dropped this gem on us. For me it's the definitive U2 album. At the time it was seen as somewhat of a departure from their earlier straight ahead rock. It proved them to be true rock icons who were confident enough in their abilities to take a huge risk. "Zoo Station" blasts open the album like a bomb siren. "One" is devastatingly beautiful. "So Cruel" has an intensity to rival "With or Without You." U2 at the top of their game.
