iTunes Review

Ozo’s vigorous live performances have reached near-legendary status; it’s difficult to sit passively and watch when, horns blaring and drums beating, the L.A. collective traipses through the crowd — after they’ve already delivered a couple of hours of infectious party grooves. Translating that energy to the recording studio, however, is an unenviable task, and that Ozomatli comes even close to achieving that goal is worth appreciating. “City of Angels,” for one, is a propulsive blend of hip-hop, R&B, and hard rock that finds them at their most potent. The fiery “La Gallina” and frenetic “La Temperatura” lean heavily on their salsa roots while “Magnolia Soul” is a prime slab of New Orleans-style funk, complete with a second-line-rhythm break. “Creo” showcases their peerless fusion of Latin rhythms, reggae vibes, and hip-hop attitude. Ozomatli is at its best when it stays away from more conventional pop and rock sounds — although conventionality, for this trailblazing bunch, could be considered a form of “branching out” — and a few of the tracks don’t quite capture the band’s spark, but at very least, some of the more robust songs here will be welcome additions to the live repertoire.

Some say it sounds "mainstream..."

...and to that, I say "So what?" I think that's what the guys were going for! They're making the rounds on LA-area radio stations, and if they blow up and become popular, I will NOT accuse them of selling out. The point of making well-polished albums like this is to expand their fanbase, and if we can get more people to enjoy their music and hear their message, so much the better.

To those that have said that this album isn't as "political" as some of their others, pay close attention to the lyrics of "Magnolia Soul." There's a couple of jabs at Dubya's administration there, and "La Temperatura" was inspired by last year's immigrant marches, so they're still making statements.

Thirdly, how can anyone say they're not covering any new ground here? "When I Close My Eyes" is more rock than anything else, and I think it was a brave experiment that really pays off at the end. You guys should hear this song live... I was banging my head right alongside everyone else!

All in all, AWESOME album! I was an Ozo fan for life already, but these guys just keep finding ways to impress me and the rest of their fans. "Ozomatli is in the house; you should know that by now!" :)

Ozomatli, ya se fue? Not yet!!!

Looks like we have another winner on our hands. Ozo is always making LPs that are perfect for live performances (and trust me, you haven't LIVED until you've been to a live Ozo show). The band continues to elude pigeon holing, and I've noticed that they're crossing genres song-to-song, as opposed to within songs (exhibited often in the self-titled debut). Additionally (as the album cover suggests), their influences have continued drifting further east, as you can hear snippits of erhus and dancing vocals. The album has flavors ranging across salsa, tejano, freestyle, New Orleans big band, reggaeton, ska, and hip hop (did I even hear a little crunk in there?!?)...yet the album as a whole sounds cohesive and consistent. Sounds like a contraditctory statement...but I guess ya gotta hear it to get what I mean. OZO!
