Album Review

On his third album overall, 2007's Elements of Life, Dutch DJ Tiësto manages to retain his focus on the style of music that has gotten him this far in the first place — trance and electronic. But this time around, he also adds bits of rock and pop to the dance party. Featuring input from several vocalists (Charlotte Martin, Julie Thompson, Christian Burns, and Jes), as well as BT, who has collaborated with Tiësto in the past, the end result is an album that sounds custom-made for blaring on a dancefloor in a trendy New York City club — "Ten Seconds Before Sunrise," "Break My Fall" (which features BT), and "In the Dark" (which features Burns) — the latter of which is probably the most crossover worthy track that Tiësto has ever penned.

Hmm...not so impressed

To be honest, it's not terrible, but it's not what I want to hear from Tiesto.

Rated as an album alone, I'd say there are a few standout tracks, and a few shoddy trance tracks...(Ten Seconds Before Sunrise, Driving To Heaven), where Tiesto has tried the ambient tip, and not really succeeded. There is too many club elements in both songs, and an absence of that wonderful industrial sound he seems to, for the most part, have abandoned.

Carpe Noctum is nice, but doesn't at all compare to Traffic...

The standout tracks are surely Do You Feel Me (where Tiesto nailed the progressive sound on the head), Sweet Things and Elements of Life.

Bright Morningstar is a very nice chilled track also...

However, trance fans and progressive fans should keep in mind that there is more to electronic music than Tiesto...he hasn't perfected anything nor made any significant production changes that are 100 percent original. If you like this album, check out Gabriel and Dresden, Kuffdam and Plant, Klaas, the list goes on and on...

Three and half stars.

Best Trance Album of 2007

Tiesto out did himself on this one. Carpe Noctum (a response to 2004's Traffic) is insane. The build up and the bass kick are absolutely nuts. I'll admit this album takes a while to get into. Most people won't like it the first time they hear it. But After a few listens it'll be your new favorite album.
In the Dark, Everything (a dedication to ecstasy), Carpe Noctum, & Bright Morningstar were the first to grab my attention. Now, I like almost every track on the record. I’d love it if "Driving to Heaven" was longer, but all in all, it's a good song.

The more you listen to it, the more you'll like it.
5 stars all the way!

Tiësto still the best

This album is standard Tiësto awesomeness! BT's vocals on "Break My Fall" are incredible just as they were in his own works "Satellite" and "Somnambulist," as well as his previous collaboration with Tiësto, "Love Comes Again," which I'm sure everyone even looking at this knows about. "In The Dark" is also an incredible track, as well as "Dance 4 Life" which he released on a single with some remixes before this album, so if you like it, there is an EP with some remixes as well as a shortened, more "action packed" version of it out there.
