iTunes Review

Santi White is a self-possessed, beautiful, and highly charismatic young woman with a striking sense of style and global sensibilities. Her debut album, Santogold, feels like an unpredictable take on Dub, Punk, New Wave and Electronic music — there’s no mistaking the throbbing, deep dub bass of “Shove It” and “Anne,” or the hefty dose of new wave on top of it. On “Lights Out” she almost sounds like a Cyndi Lauper for the 21st century. Other parts of the record call out to other feminist touchstones of the past, including Sleater Kinney (“You’ll Find A Way”), The Slits (“Say Aha”), and Laurie Anderson (“My Superman”). Indeed, Santogold often feels like the culmination of thirty years of iconoclastic feminine influences pouring forth from the mind of this precocious Bed-Stuy performer.

Super Great

She vomits gold. Imagine how great she sings.

If you like M.I.A.

you will find this in the same realm with songs like 'Creator'. Throughout, there is less of M.I.A.'s world sound and more of a Gwen Stafani during her No Doubt days (Say Aha) meets The Pretenders infused with pop (Lights Out.) The influence of the past three decades resinates unmistakably though this album. It's the most eclectic realease i've heard this year.

FINALLY

I can't even find the right words to express how much I fell in love with Santogold the first time I heard her sound. I swear this whole album is the soundtrack to my life..or at least what I blast at the supermarket... And being a beautiful sista girl that is not afraid to rock makes me proud and just goes to show that real music is a state of mind and from what I hear Santogold has a beautiful mind. peace.

White and John Hill, her former counterpart from ska-punk band Stiffed, use their common backgrounds as production-savvy musicians to make bombastic, bass-oriented songs that fuse punk, reggae, grime, and indie rock with electro. Tribal island rhythms merge with flavorful digital chirps and blips, culminating...
